at 171 pounds, senior Tyler Wilps (Chartiers Valley) suffered an 11-3 major decision setback to Cumberland Valley senior Tristan Warner ... Wilps is now 39-1 on the season, while Warner is 38-2 ... Wilps now faces Coughlin junior Josh Popple (36-6) in the consolation semis ... Warner will confront Central Dauphin junior Kenny Courts (41-0) tonight in the Championship Finals;

at 215 pounds, St. Marys senior Sean Sadosky (now 35-1) was a 15-0 (4:50) Technical Fall victim to Selinsgrove senior Spencer Myers (now 43-0) ... Sadosky will oppose Souderton junior Joe Stolfi (37-3) in the conso semis shortly ... Myers takes on East Pennsboro junior Zachary Nye (39-0) tonight in the 215/finale !!

130 pounds ... Boiling Springs senior Joe Spisak (now 46-1) outlasted Tyrone Area junior Ronnie Garbinsky via a 6-3 decision ... Garbinsky had come to States with a gaudy 38-0 season mark ... Spisak will face Shady Side Academy senior Frank Martellotti (48-2) in the Championship Finals on Saturday afternoon ... Garbinsky will oppose Shamolin junior Brandon Pesarchick (38-6) in the Consolation Semis at 9:00 this evening !!

AA - Roberts drops to Consos

at 103 pounds, North Star sophomore Nick Roberts (who came in to the tourney at 35-0) lost a heartbreaker decision, 4-3, to Line Mountain freshman Zain Retherford ... Retherford's third period escape was the difference, as Roberts dropped to the Consos and Retherford created a Championship Finals showdown against Bermudian Springs soph Brad Farley ... Retherford's season record stands at 39-1 ... Farley's season mark is now 38-1!!

Just occurred in the AAA Quarters ... 112 pounds ... Hempfield Area's Paul Bewak (junior, now 36-6), just decisioned previously-undefeated Josh DiSanto of Pennsbury via a 15-10 verdict ... DiSanto is a freshman phenom who came into this tourney with a 31-0 slate ... last weekend, he claimed the title at the Southeast Regional.

Day 2 AA Quarterfinals

A couple upsets that people might say happened at this morning's PIAA State AA Wrestling Championships. Start at the very first weight class. At 103, returning silver medalist Evan Link of Penn Cambria, was beaten 4-0 by David White of Athens. White, a Senior North East Regional Champion came into the state tournament with a 41-3 record while Link, a Junior, South West Regional third place qualifier had a 34-4 record. 119 returning State Champion Arty Walsh formerly of Wyomissing now a wrestler at Juniata, was beaten by South Western 2nd place Regional qualifier Tanner Hough from Westmont-Hilltop, a Junior with a record of 35-5. Also of Juniata at 125 returning Silver Medalist at 112 lbs last year to Arty Walsh, was beaten by North East Regional Champion Colton Fought of Benton a Junior with a record of 38-6. Last, highly ranked in the Nation, Tyler Demott of Benton was beaten by North Western Regional Champion Joe Chittester, a Senior at Ridgway High who entered the State Championship with a unbeaten record of 37-0.

Tyler Buckwalter - Central Mountain vs JM Staudenmeyer - Plymouth Whitemarsh

Both wrestlers tie up looking to gain the match's first points. Staudenmeyer in deep on a double leg with Buckwalter holding the inside leg tight. Staudenmeyer trying to spin for two but stalemate is called. Back to the Center for a restart. Buckwalter changes his level, to no avail. Staudenmeyer again in deep on a double leg as both wrestlers go out of bounds. Another restart at the center of the mat. Forty seconds left in the first we remain tied 0-0. Now Buckwalter goes in deep on a single leg with Staudenmeyer locking up the inside leg again for another stalemate. Neither wrestler seems to be able to obtain the match's first takedown. First period ends tied 0-0. Buckwalter chooses to start the second period from the bottom position. Staudenmeyer drives a half Nelson in attempt to turn Buckwalter, but can't secure nearfall. Both wrestlers out of bounds to the center for another restart. Caution on Buckwalter. Staudenmeyer sets on top. This time a caution for Staudenmeyer for a false start. :26 left in the second period, still tied 0-0. Great job by Staudenmeyer riding Buckwalter for the entire second period. Buckwalter has come close on several ocassions on escaping but can't seem to get out. To start the third period, Buckwalter quickly reverses Staudenmeyer to take the lead 2-0. Buckwalter locks in a tight waist and quickly brings Staudenmeyer back to the mat. Buckwalter chooses to give Staudenmeyer the escape verses the reversal and now leads 2-1 with 1:34 left in the third period. Buckwalter is in deep on a double leg to take a 4-1 lead with :43 left in the match. Tyler Buckwalter wins 4-1 over JT Staudenmeyer of Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Newest PIAA AA 100 win club member

Congratulations to Trey Easter of Bedford on becoming the newest member of the PIAA 100 win club. Easter, a Senior at Bedford Area High School, received his 100th win of his career with a 4-1 decision over Tim Clark of Saegertown in the First Round of Consolations. Easter will now move onto the Second Round of Consolations tomorrow to face the loser of the Garet Pisani (Ridgway) vs Trevor Kushner (Westmont-Hilltop) Quarterfinal round.

Biggest Upset so far in AA

In my opinion, the biggest upset of the day would have to be at the 140 lb weight class. Seth Beitz, a Senior at Juniata High School, older brother of the 2009 returning silver medalist at the 112 lb weight class Zach Beitz, won a nice decision over Phillip Steinburg of Central Cambria. Seth, a Senior at Juniata High School and the South Eastern 4th place regional qualifier, used a takedown and reversal in route to securing his 6-3 decision over Steinberg the South Western Regional Champion. Beitz will wrestle the North Eastern Third place Regional qualifier Alec Eggerton of Loyalsock in tomorrows Quarter Final round. Steinberg will drop to the first consolation round and face the South Eastern second place Regional finisher, Dillon Killian of Annville-Cleona.

Ryan Bernheimer Westmont-Hilltop vs Luke DeLuise Pius X

Bernheimer is in Red, DeLuise in Green anklets. Both wrestlers in Neutral, with Bernheimer picking up the first takedown. DeLuise escapes right away. Both wrestlers back to the Neutral position. Bernheimer with underhooks working forward in attempt of another takedown as both wrestlers go out of bounds. Back to the center for a restart. DeLuise takes bottom to start the second period. Bernheimer riding a tight waist as both wrestlers go out of bounds. DeLuise back to the center in his referees position. Caution on the top man as Bernheimer started before the whistle. Bernheimer riding a tight waist, one on one tight but can't seem to turn him. DeLuise escapes to make the score 2-2. Bernheimer choses to start the third period from the bottom position. DeLuise rides Bernheimer tight as he attempts to lock up a cradle to no avail. A restart has Bernheimer getting an escape to go ahead 3-2 with a minute left in the third. Both wrestlers remain in the Neutral position with less then :30 to go. DeLuise hits a lateral drop putting Bernheimer to his back with :26 left in the third for five points to go ahead and win the match 7-3.

New for this year Ill be taking photos from time to time to post on the blog with the wrestling action we bring to you. So stay tuned for play by play as well as photos for this years action periodically throughout the three days of the PIAA AA and AAA State Wrestling Championships.
